Yesterday, Nuxeo, an open source ECM platform developer, announced the launch of its Software as a Service offering for document management and collaborative sharing.

This news may not be ground breaking, but it does demonstrate that with increasing frequency industry players are developing SaaS applications, expanding their on-demand offerings or rolling out web-based tools next to their traditional line-up of on-premise software.

And given the current state of the economy, these providers are likely to find interested customers.

Last month, an IDC survey revealed that 60 percent of respondents think now is an ideal time to negotiate discounts on traditional on-premise software. The group also noted that companies are paying closer attention to software pricing schemes, realizing that SaaS solutions could be an option that meets their budgetary constraints.

“In order to survive the downturn and position for growth in an eventual recovery, software companies will have to evolve their go-to-market approach, and subscription pricing and SaaS will play a key role,” said Amy Konary, program director, Software Pricing, Licensing, and Delivery at IDC.
